Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club Won By 8 Wkts

Match report C&CF II started their 2011 season with a 23 point victory over RNA Sports at the Compton Oval.

Weather related cliche- pitch related cliche- toss related cliche- Compton asked the opposition to bat first.

Russ Dearlove partnered Jon Gray and the much anticipated season was finally underway.

Two maidens from the first three overs set the tone for what was to be a highly impressive bowling display from the 2nds. 13 Maidens in total, no no balls, and only a handful of wides, and all this backed up by some very tight fielding and one moment of genius!!!

Jon Gray got his tenure as captain off to a flyer as he did Vallis for pace (cough cough) with Reado taking a smart catch standing up, to collect a wicket in his second over. More maidens followed and after the opening pair were finished the score read 12 overs, 13 runs 1 wicket.

Mahmood Agha replaced the captain and after discovering from the first two balls that he was moving it a lot, made the batsmen play, to which the No 3 duly provided Rich Eatwell with a simple catch in the covers. This was to be the catalyst he needed to bowl an excellent spell, plenty of movement, varying pace, it was all too much for the visitors and he finished with daybu figures of 9-2-13-2, highly impressive! Paddy replaced the luckless Russ, and after a couple of looseners finally managed to coax the opening batsman into a loose shot which was snuffled by Jon Gray at Mid Off. After 19 overs RNA were 27 for 4.

Dan Kearns, sporting some dubious headgear, then treated the Compton faithful to some exhibition fielding as he ran out Singh. And following a compassionate plea to his teammate at square-leg, Singh traipsed off thinking of what could have been.

Rich Eatwell then came on to join in the fun, and after being hit for a four and six off consecutive balls managed to come back well taking 2 wickets for 5 runs. Gray decided selfishly that he would come back to on to try and remove the tail, and thanks to two catches, another from Reado(his fourth of the game), and a very smart one from McGann at slip finished with 3 wickets.
After some controversy the 10th wicket proved harder to come by until in the 41st over Paddy finally dismissed the No 11 for the second time, leaving C&CF a target of 77 with some dark clouds looming!

Compton eventually secured victory in the 15th over of their reply, no thanks to Messers McGann and Kearns whose combined total of 17, and combined embarassment at being bounced out, meant their combined journey of 180 odd miles was truly worthless.

However, a steady performance from CJ with the willow, and a swift knock from Paddy spared the second team blushes as they notched up a crucial opening day victory.

An excellent performance all round, lets hope we can keep it up for the trip to Hurstbourne Priors next week who also secured a victory.
