Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club 4th XI v Easton & Martyn Worthy III on Sat 11 Jun 2011 at 2pm
Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club Won by 6 runs

Match report The 4ths cut it extremely fine as they snuck home against bottom of the table Easton and Martyr Worthy 3rds, winning by just 6 runs at King George V playing fields.

With showers looking threatening throughout the day and a very green wicket, Easton and Martyr Worthy won the toss and elected to bowl. Matt Scorey and Nick Spearing looked to get Compton off to a good start. After a few boundaries from Nick and some close run out calls, Nick and Matt looked to have made a solid start. But as the score reached 28, Matt was bowled by the young opening bowler Whitlock for 6.

2 overs later, Nick suffered the same fate as Matt. After being dropped at slip, Nick was then bowled for 15. Chris Ashman was then removed for just 3, as Compton slipped to 35 for 3.Gaz and Jenny Wilson looked to re-build the innings, with Gaz crashing the ball to the boundary three times. However, he was also bowled by a yorker from the change bowler, for 14.

This bought James Copland to the crease. James hit three consecutive boundaries off of his first three balls, before rain stopped play for 10 minutes. James returned after in the same vein, hitting a big shot which fell narrowly short of a maximum. Jenny looked to capitalise on a wide ball, but could only drag the ball into her own stumps after adding 11 to the total.

James Copland and James Flood added a useful partnership, with some lusty blows. They put on a partnership of 40, before Floody was caught at mid-wicket off of the spin bowler, Stannard for 22. James Copland was then bowled by veteran seamer Hicks for an important 32.

Phil was removed by a beauty first ball, Dave Stagg added a few before being caught at mid-wicket and Graeme Forward was removed for 0, leaving Compton all out for a below-par 134.

After tea, Compton had a flying start in the field, with James Flood and Ian Forward removing one of the openers each, thanks to an impressive close catch from Dave Stagg. This left the visitors 1 for 2. Ian continued his impressive lines bowling another two batsmen. Dave Stagg bowled tight lines from the top end, building pressure as wickets fell from the Pavilion end. Graeme Forward joined the party with the wickets, clean bowling the new man.

As the number 3 batsman continued to score runs freely, Graeme removed another man as he edged the ball onto his helmet only to loop into the hands of Nick Spearing behind the stumps. Phil Wilson took the ball to remove another man for 16, thanks to a solid catch from James Copland at mid-off.

After drinks, with the visitors requiring 40 to win, Dave struck. A top edge was comfortably caught by Nick and then Dave bowled the number 10 first ball, leaving Compton needing just one more wicket. The dangerous number 3 was continuing to score, as Dave, Phil and Jenny looked to remove the number 11. After taking them to within 2 hits, Phil coaxed the number 3 into an expansive shot, only for him to be caught at fine leg by James Flood.

A close finish for Compton gives them their second consecutive win. With Phil unavailable next week, Nick is taking the reigns of the 4th XI, hoping to guide the team to a win against Ashford Hill 2nds.
