Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club Won By 3 wickets

Match report Compton and Chandler's Ford 1st XI Match Report August 4th : Vs. Hungerford

It was a bowlers day this Saturday out in Compton down. The umpiring wasn't the only surprising occurrence as the wicket had looked more like a road with a few stone sized pot-holes. However, the pancake-flat surface was peppered early-on with another tight and destructive first ten by Al and Rusty; leaving Hungerford in dire straights. One over from the skipper, including a dropped catch, a dubious run-out decision and multiple plays and misses has been dubbed the most unlucky of the season. The first-change bowlers, both new additions this week, kept up the pressure. Mike Haworth bowled quick and tight and was rewarded; picking up 3 important wickets for a miserly 16 after 6. He did this against all the odds, considering the umpire from his end had no-balled a shin-high full toss and shaken his head after the batsmen had middled one through to Mark the keeper. Rich continued to tie-up the other end picking up two himself before Amiya finished off the job with two from the other end. Extras top-scored during the Hungerford innings with 23, and this was by no means worsened by the multitude of no-balls bowled by an unnamed individual. So the team picked up the full bowling points; bowling the opposition out for a meagre 105, however, this would prove difficult to chase even on the Waca-like Compton strip.
Amiya was quick out of the blocks firing 21 off his 19 deliveries, however he later fell to the erratic, opening leg-spinner who was later gifted a second by the thrifty umpire. Mark would have had no objection had he hit the ball, but he later described how he had missed it by a good couple of inches, not only testament to the grip, and turn the bowler was attaining but also to the issues we now had with the umpire. Anyway, he was given out caught behind and we found ourselves two down. The required run-rate had dwindled but wickets continued to fall as their import, a sharp left-arm seamer took three. Both Andy. G, the hero from last week, and Syed fell cheaply with Jack providing some much needed resistance, however with 40 or so to get, we found ourselves 5 down with a fair amount of work ahead. Andy Murkitt and Pranay rebuilt, the latter looking to atone for his prolific oversteps in the previous innings. The two saw off the openers, with a couple of scares, and the job seemed to simplify. Yet again though, the more innocuous bowlers proved effective, Andy falling to a leg stump medium delivery from the new bowler. Pranay will contest his decision, but to no avail, the non-striker feeling it was outside the line having trapped the ball between bat and pad. Luckily, the captain and the hero with the ball; Mikey Haworth, finished the job to secure a much needed 20 points, keeping Compton ( and Chandler's ford) in the race for promotion.
What had looked like a batting haven had produced a surprisingly testing batting examination with no player safe from the trigger at the village end. Compton resume their bid next week against the mid-table side; Southampton Community.
