Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club 1st XI v Wellow & Plaitford on Sat 21 Jul 2012 at 2pm
Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club Won By 9 wickets

Match report Eight wickets, twelve runs. Never before in the illustrious history of Compton and Chandler's Ford summed up an entire match so succinctly as the 1st XI stormed to a 9-wicket victory over Wellow and Plaitford.

The scene was set. Four weeks with little cricket was at the forefront of the minds of the many thousands lining the boundary at the Memorial Playing Fields. As is customary both captains went to the middle to carry out the ancient tradition of tossing the coin. Wellow and Plaitford's captain made a strange choice in deciding bat having called correctly considering the huge amount of rainfall in the last week and Compton's reptutation as a pudding.

Despite this the opening batsman went to the middle hoping with high spirits hoping to forge a career defining innings. Instead they ran into the runaway train that is the hero of our piece. Russell Falcon Horatio Hector Dearlove has been plying his trade for many a season, which his flowing gingers locks flowing in the wind as he bowls another hooping inswinger but this was his tour de force.

But before our hero was able to do the damage Captain Birdseye removed one opener with what one observer called "the greatest delivery ever seen at Compton". Starting outside leg stump, pitching on leg stump, hit the top of off; need I say more!

And then the avalanche began. Russ had: the other opener caught behind, one victim caught at extra cover by overseas star Reid, another smartly caught by self-proclaiming legend Eatwell, five other batsman(including one who played a strange innings at 21-3) bowled as all failed to comprehend that failing to accomodate for inswing will cause you to be bowled!

8-12 were the glorious figures by the end (Al picked up the other one in a simple caught and bowled) as Wellow and Plaitford were bowled out for 39.

The top 3 then knocked off the runs for the loss of Amiya but the day was Dearlove's and long may it remain in our memories.
