Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club 2nd XI v Amesbury on Sat 01 Aug 2015 at 1:30pm
Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club Won by 10 runs.

Match report Imposing victories and thumping defeats have been the order of the 2015 season so far for the 2nd XI but, this week against Amesbury, the fans got their wish and were treated to a nail-biting encounter at the Memorial Playing Fields.

Boosted by the inclusion of living C&CF legend Amiya Pradhan, skipper Scallan yet again proved himself to be a Grade-A tosser and chose to bat in sunny conditions on a flat looking Compton track. Amiya and Luke made a watchful but steady start to put on 50 for the first wicket before the former was bowled by future CD4N Hall-of-Famer, Dobson, with a ball that viciously jagged back. Gary, eager to not suffer the same fate, managed to get his pad in the way of a carbon copy delivery and was judged lbw to make the score 55 for 2. Volume levels on boundary plummeted whilst Amesbury, buoyed by their breakthrough, fielded with intensity and enthusiasm. Wickets then fell at regular intervals as Compton’s previously prolific batsmen all threatened but ultimately failed to go on to make a big score. The fielding side sensed victory was there for the taking but they hadn’t reckoned with the considerable talents of Jovan Dhariwal. The 14 year old prodigy showed control and maturity to bat with the tail and move the score from a perilous 135-8 to a defendable, if below par, 171-9 off 45 overs.

After a fine Lawrence tea, last week’s heroes with the ball, Zach and Nanda, opened up looking for some early wickets to contrast their late arrival to the first 1:30pm start of the season. Nanda (1-40) deployed his little-used variation to have Dando caught by Coxy (the first of three crucial catches for him) but further wickets proved elusive as Brigadier Underwood resolutely defended both the bowling and the chat that Compton aimed his way. Despite the lack of wickets, accurate bowling meant that progress for Amesbury was slow – Zach (0-20) nearly repeating his world famous feat of 2012 by bowling four maidens in five overs. With ‘King of Spin’ Amiya (0-31) offering nothing loose at his end, something had to give if Amesbury were going to reach their target. It was the change bowling of Gasson (2-31) that eventually prised Underwood out in the 23rd over for 18 as TL claimed a fine, almost diving, catch at mid-on. The visitors now began to launch their attack and attempted to up the rate. Fortunately, the home team had the perfect weapon to counter this: T. Holmes (4-32). He bowled with impeccable control and was backed up by excellent work in the field. Notable mentions must go to Gary who took a firm catch which, although nowhere near as spectacular as Coxy’s gem, did save him a very expensive trip to Tommy’s dentist on the one year anniversary of the AWE Tadley mishap and also Dan who tirelessly patrolled the boundaries. As the overs ticked away and wickets fell more regularly, Amesbury still stubbornly refused to throw in the towel with Gower, Dobson and Gostelon all threatening to take the game away from the promotion hopefuls. Each of the eleven players on the fielding team were required to dig deep and show their character. Eventually this made the difference as the opposition maintained their reputation as ‘unluckiest team in the league’ to finish just 10 runs short of Compton’s total.

It was a great team effort where the second team showed their resilience and ability to perform under pressure. Credit must also go to Amesbury for their friendly nature off the field and positive, aggressive attitude on the pitch. With four games left of the season, the big question that remains is whether C & CF can continue to mix it with the big boys of County Four and secure an unlikely promotion. What is sure though is that a bumper away following will be expected next weekend when Captain Scallan leads his faithful troops into battle for the local derby against Sparsholt.
