Match report Barefoot in the Park as U16s win again

The obscure 1960s movie 'Barefoot in the Park' (don't rush to find it on Netflix!) is probably most famous to film buffs as being the film for which Robert Redford turned down the lead in 'The Graduate'. This piece of trivia came to mind when watching the U16 team have another comfortable win at Fleming Park.

Batting first, Jovan and George once again got us off to a great start, running and calling well. Jovan retired in the fourth over and George (19) was out next ball with the score 59. Dylan (albeit against their best bowler) then spent a couple of overs imitating the batting on the first 4 3/4 days of the Test in the Emirates, but Joe immediately started scoring quickly, seeing us to 81 at the half-way point. Having seen his mate forge ahead of him, Dylan then took 19 off an over and both retired in quick succession after the back wall had had some hammer. With three men in the hutch, Alfie and Greg (both run out for 1) sacrificed themselves and Jovan (43 not out) and Joe (42) scored heavily at the end, before Dylan returned for the final ball and was run out for 26, leaving Trojans to chase a formidable total of 163-5.

After a poor bowling and fielding performance in the previous game, things improved greatly this week, helped by good performances by debutants Alfie and Greg.

After a dodgy first over where he struggled with his line, Alfie came back well and his next two overs only went for 12 in total.Joe opened with him and bowled fast and straight, while Greg confounded the batsmen with flight and guile.

At the half-way point, they were 48-3 and effectively out of the match, the wickets being a good run out by Dylan and 2 for Gregg (2-21), the first bowled and the second to the greatest catch you'll ever see indoors from Jovan (one handed, low, off a really hard hit - think Ben Stokes at Trent Bridge off Broad if you want to know how amazing it was). Jovan subsequently got a run out too.
The second half of the innings, rather than just petering out, was enlivened by Dylan, after a poor first over, deciding that the problem was the slipperiness of his new shoes. He therefore removed his shoes and socks and played the rest of the game barefoot (surprisingly with no concern from the umpire about health and safety issues). However, this didn't improve his accuracy, as his second over went for more! (He got redemption at the Rose bowl later though.)
In the end, Trojans got 112-4 to leave us winners by 51 runs. Their opener (Ollie Jenkins) batted well for 35 not out.
In summary, another comfortable win, but this time with excellent fielding to back up the batting and, although we still conceded 36 in no balls and wides, these mainly arose in 3 overs - the overall bowling was much better than last time.
Next up we have OTs and Romsey, who are a very strong side, but if we can keep up the quality of the batting and fielding and improve the bowling further, we should do well. Once again, well done boys!
