Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report U16s Crush South Wilts at the Ageus Bowl

The U16s arrived at the Ageus Bowl to find their first opponents, South Wilts, in the process of beating the Winchester District team comfortably. After our narrow win over Parley in the opening match, we were therefore expecting another tough game.

Jovan won the toss and inserted South Wilts. There was also a change in tactics, as we opened with Dylan and Joe Vaughan. The former started where he had left off in the previous game, with an excellent opening over that only went for 6. Joe followed up with his normal mix of flight, spin and accuracy and by the time they'd each bowled 2 overs, South Wilts were struggling on 31-2. The wickets had been a catch by Jameel off Joe and a run out from a quite stunning bit of fielding by Jovan, who ran in from the back wall and fielded half-way along the offside wall with his left hand. In one movement, he spun and switched hands to unleash a ferocious throw that produced a direct hit at the keeper's end with the batsman out of his ground.

In fact the whole team were fielding brilliantly, something they maintained throughout the whole innings to keep pressure on the opposing batsmen.

Ash replaced Dylan and also only began excellently, going for just 6 in his first over and picking up a wicket, thanks to another great catch by Jovan. This one was one-handed on the back wall when the ball would have gone for 6. At the half-way point, with Joe (1-19) bowled out, South Wilts were struggling on 45-3.

Jameel came on and bowled 2 good overs for 19 runs and Ash finished his 3 overs with 2-18, the other wicket being a catch by Dylan at backward point. Jovan bowled the penultimate over, only going for 3 runs, leaving South Wilts 85-4 after 11.

Dylan was left to bowl the last over and had their number 4 caught by Jovan as he tried to force some late runs. There were 3 ball left to get the last bowling wicket and therefore maximum bowling points, but he needed only one, castling their new batsman first ball to finish with 2-19. South Wilts were all out for 90 and it had been an absolutely outstanding display of bowling and, particularly, fielding.

Jovan and Jameel started sensibly and we had 18 off 2 overs. Jameel then pushed the ball into the onside and time stood still as he seemed to go through a range of songs from my youth ("Run! Run! Run!", "Stop! Stop! Stop!", "Stuck in the Middle With You", "If You Gotta Go, Go Now"). Not surprisingly, Jovan was left stranded and run out. Joe replaced Jovan, while Jameel did all you can in a situation like that and kept on batting properly, going on retire with 25. Luke replaced him and, like in the previous game, brought a completely different tempo to the innings, taking very few balls to retire on 26, a knock containing some very high class shots and good calling and running.Joe (21*) and Dylan (3*) then saw us home in 8.3 overs.

So overall a comprehensive win, featuring some outstanding cricket to which, once again, everyone contributed. The only slightly disappointing thing after giving out such a thrashing is that we missed out on maximum points because, under the scoring system, when chasing such a low total, we could only get full batting points by not losing a wicket.
