Winchester Warriors 8pm v Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club U16 Indoor on Sun 25 Oct 2015 at 8pm
Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club Won by 20 runs

Match report Tight bowling and inspired fielding maintain U16s' 100% winning start at Ageus Bowl

After thrashing South Wilts by 5 wickets, the U16s immediately took on the Winchester and District side, who themselves had been beaten by South Wilts earlier in the evening by 6 wickets. It therefore looked a comfortable match on paper, despite the opposition including George and Joe Murray, both of whom have been in outstanding form for CCF at Fleming Park.

Batting first, Jovan and Jameel got us off to a good start, taking 27 off the first 2 overs, before Jovan (6) was bowled around his legs for the second time in three games. Joe V then joined Jameel and they took us up to 63 at the half-way stage. Jameel was then out to a good stumping by George in the next over, for a well-made 24. After Joe retired, Luke and Dylan were both trying to force the pace, without the fluency or shot selection shown in earlier innings. Dylan (4) gave a return catch to the bowler and at the end of the 8th over we had 78. Ash then gave Luke good support, but at the end of the 11 over we only had 106.

In the final over, Ash was run out for 4 and the returning Joe c&b for a good 30. Luke (26*) though did manage some good blows, including a six off the last ball. We therefore had to defend a disappointing total of 119 (earning only one batting point) and would need a bowling and fielding performance every bit as good as we had managed earlier in the evening.

Joe Vaughan took the first over this time and Dylan the second. Both turned the screw on the opposition immediately and were once again backed up by brilliant fielding. In Joe's second over, Jameel produced a wonderful diving stop and underarm throw with one stump to aim at to run out their opener with a direct hit at the bowler's end. In the next over, Dylan bowled their number 3 for a duck, leaving them on 24-2 after 4 really good overs. Ash and Jameel replaced them, Jameel producing his best two overs of the winter so far as the opposition reached 57-3 off 8 overs.

Winchester had lost their third wicket in the 7th over when George, who had batted very well for 23, was run out at the bowler's end by a direct hit from Joe Vaughan, who was fielding behind square on the leg side - yet another superb bit of fielding.

Jovan replaced Ash for the 9th over, which only went for 6 runs. In the 10th over, Jameel (1-25) had Joe Murray caught off the roof (who'd have guessed?) by Joe Vaughan, who in the next over got our fifth wicket by bowling their number 6, who had made a good 12. Joe finished with 1-30.

So going into the final over, Winchester had reached 94-5, needing an unlikely (but not impossible) 26 to win, while we needed another wicket for maximum bowling points. Dylan again bowled an excellent 'death' over at their top scorer, but unfortunately couldn't get the breakthrough as Winchester finished on 99-5. In a low-scoring game though, Dylan's 1-13 in 3 overs proved crucial, as did the consistently excellent fielding.

So overall, another good win to complete a 100% start to the Ageus Bowl season. It would be difficult to improve much on the fantastic bowling and fielding displays in this evening's two matches, but against stronger sides we will need to bat better than in these last two games. In particular, our average score at the 6 over mark in the 3 games is 59 (with a highest of 63), leaving a lot to do in the second half of an innings batting first if we are to get to two batting bonus points (available at 125) and in particular the maximum of 3 (at 150 runs).

Next up (on 15th November) we have a very strong Basingstoke & North Hants side and the New Forest district team, but the team should be full of confidence after the start they have made. Well done everyone!
