Match report Dodgems, car crash and fracture provide disappointing end to the Ageus Bowl year for U16s

In the gap between matches, the U16s at the Ageus Bowl had a session on the dodgems to help them get over the disappointment of defeat to Hook. Some of the driving was as wayward as the bowling had been!

The next match was against the team bottom of the league, who only had one victory to date. Jovan took the decision to bat first on winning the toss.

We made steady progress against accurate but undemanding bowling. After 6 overs we were 64-1, Jameel having just been run out for 24. Jovan retired just afterwards, but for the first time this winter Luke (3) went quickly, caught and bowled. As a result, there was no impetus in the second half of the innings. Dylan got run out for 10 following a direct hit as he looked for sharp runs, before Joe was eventually run out in the last over for 22. It was only thanks to some good strokes and running by Ash (15 not out) that we got up to 125-4 by the close.

Dylan, still not himself, opened with 2 wides and an opening over that went for 11, after which he was replaced by Ash. By the time Joe (0-24) had bowled through, SE Hants Sixers were 64-0 off 6 overs. By this stage, we had already given away more in extras than they had in their entire innings.

Jovan then replaced Ash, but his first 2 overs went for 26, including (for the second game running) a problem with front foot no balls. Jameel, though, bowled the 8th over and immediately hit a good line and length, his first over only going for 6. After 9 overs the Sixers were 90-0, both openers having retired.

Jameel then bowled another excellent over, which brought 2 wickets (a catch by Dylan and a run out), after which he had 1-8 off two overs. For the first time, at 92-2 off 10 overs, the Sixers were well behind the run rate needed.

Rather than use Dylan or Ash again, Jovan stuck with himself and Jameel for the last 2 overs. The 11th went for 16, Jovan finishing with 0-39. This left 18 needed to win from the last over.

Jameel, in his best spell of the winter, continued to bowl very straight, his first two balls producing a 3 and two leg-byes. 13 were therefore needed off 4 balls. The next ball got slapped back past him for 4. Unfortunately the next ball was a high full toss that got smashed over mid-off for 6, so that now only 3 were needed off two balls. Jameel then got back on length and the next ball was hit to the offside (straight), where Joe cleverly ran with the ball to effect a run out, rather than risk a throw. 3 were then needed off one ball. This last delivery was also a good ball, but was hit against the wall into the offside and they crossed for the winning run before it could be fielded. No fault should be placed with Jameel - he had bowled much better than our other seamers in this game, as his final figures of 1-24 confirm.

So the dodgems had been followed by a (metaphorical) car crash. This was a game we should have won comfortably, but didn't. It highlighted some common problems: not scoring quickly enough when the opposition don't give us lots of extras and an inability to bowl straight consistently. (We had conceded 17 more in no balls/wides that the Sixers and some stats circulated by the league organiser after Xmas showed that we are fourth (out of 12) in the table for most no balls/wides per game.)

However, all of this is only cricket rather than real life. A few days after the game, Ash fractured his shoulder and is now out for the rest of the winter. He has bowled some excellent spells this campaign and made a good contribution with the bat in both of these defeats. We all wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Our next fixtures at this venue are on St Valentine's Day. With 4 games left, we still have an outside chance of winning the league, reflecting how well the team have done so far this winter.
