Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club 1st XI v Bramshaw on Sat 18 Jun 2016 at 2pm
Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club Won by 104 runs

Match report The 1st XI were inserted on Saturday and the damp patch just short of a length where the covers had leaked meant batting was not likely to be easy. Josh perhaps thought otherwise, as he painted the boundary line as far away from the square as possible to make scoring even more difficult.

Buddy and Liam batted very cautiously against a decent attack to get us off to a sound start, but even well hit shots were sometimes only going for one on the damp outfield. After Buddy (13) unluckily played on, Alex came in and began with some very positive shots. When Liam (23) was caught and bowled, the skipper entered, but after a couple of nice fours holed out for 11.

This brought Dylan in at 87-3 and, for the third game in a row, he was involved in a crucial middle-order partnership. Playing with a maturity beyond his years, he once again combined a sound defence with some excellent attacking shots on both sides of the wicket. He and Alex had taken the score to 138 when Dylan (28) had a rather unlucky dismissal, mid-off running to deep mid-on to take a superb diving catch off what must have been very close to a waist-high full toss.

Scott (15) entered and immediately hit a couple of lusty blows, including a six over mid-wicket, as it looked like we would coast to 200 plus. However, he and Alex (48) went in quick succession and our fabled deep batting line-up then folded in what can only be described as a pretty inept manner. In particular, in being clean bowled, Zach produced a shot that would even have shamed Courtney Walsh! We ended up being bowled out for 173, our last 7 wickets having gone down for 35 runs. Their opening bowler (4-34) and slow left-armer (2-22 in 10 overs) had both bowled very well though.

Your correspondent missed the first two balls of the Bramshaw innings, bowled by Josh, but they apparently produced a difficult one-handed chance to mid-on, followed by a big six over long-off!

Both Josh and Zach struggled for the right line and length on the drying pitch, but Zach was soon among the wickets as their opener played on. He then got another two wickets, including a brilliant caught and bowled, low at full stretch.

It was soon apparent that Bramshaw had little to offer with the bat and they were bowled out for 69 in 23 overs, even though we helped them out with some dropped catches. The wickets were shared by Zach (3-23), Scorey (3-12, including a great catch by Luke at point, diving forwards (the sort that TV replays would no doubt show (incorrectly) not to have carried)) and Beano (4-13, including sending one batsman's leg stump cartwheeling as he offered no shot).

The team has now won 5 out of 6 and sit second in the table. This 104 run win was a good way to celebrate the skipper's birthday!
