Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club 2nd XI v Rowledge III on Sat 05 May 2018 at 1:00pm
Compton and Chandlers Ford Cricket Club Won

Match report After the recent wet and cold weather, 3 days of baking sun allowed us to provide a very good looking wicket for the opening game of the season. Skipper, Scallan was convinced all week that even without Nanda for the first half an hour was going to bowl if he won the toss. Fortunately, he lost it and we were inserted to bat.
Ethan and new boy Alex got us off to an excellent start scoring 50 off the first 10. With big hooping swing at one end and some very average bowling at the other both looked extremely comfortable. Mid way through the 11th, Alex managed to knick one to slip for 14. This bought PL to the crease in his newly favoured number 3 position. Looking a bit rusty he departed for 2 after being hit on the foot in front of the timbers. This meant a return for the legend himself, Amiya, making his first appearance for 3 years. Ethan continued to hit the ball to all parts with some classy looking shots and some horrible little dabs which almost cost him his wicket. A lack of pace did for Amiya who chipped one to gully making way for Angove who hoped to continue his good form from last year but like PL, was suffering from a lack of match practise and was dismissed for 1. Enter Captain Gary who looked like batsman of old after a disappointing 2017 who pulled, swept and nurdled his way to 50. Trying to up the rate, Ethan was unfortunately run out for 89 after Gary called him through for a second and Nanda helped his skipper get us to a very respectable score of 200.
After a very pleasant tea courtesy of Ethan (his mum) the boys headed out in the early evening heat hoping to bowl out Rowledge. Nanda made the perfect start by removing their opening batsman with the first ball of the innings. He was supported well by young George Halfacre who was making his 2nd XI debut. Despite the odd front foot no-ball, George eventually managed to dismiss their No. 3 - George had his first wicket for the side! Rowledge then batted very nicely, punishing the bad balls and making the bowlers work hard whilst trying to keep it tight. Greg replaced Nanda and his first ball was dispatched for 6 but Greg thought he had his revenge when he had the batsman caught on rope but was called for a high no ball. With spin at both ends the opposition kept ticking over the runs before Amiya finally had his man caught by Jamie. Holmes was bought on to replace Greg from the pavilion end and made his breakthrough with the final ball before drinks- finding the edge and Angove taking a good catch behind. After drinks, Holmes continued keeping it tight and frustrating their opener, giving him the single first ball of the over and giving nothing away for the rest whilst the new batsman tried to settle in. Nanda came back on to take his second wicket, with Holmes changing ends. Once Basker had finished his stint, Scallan provided a stroke of genius to bring on Alex whose offies worked wonders as he managed to remove their opener for 87 and then cleared up the tail with 15 runs and 13 balls to spare. A very respectable debut indeed!
A very good win for the twos, scoring 200 after being inserted was a top effort. Player of the day, Ethan finally scored the runs in the second team that he should have been doing years beforehand- perhaps he should go to Oz every winter. Great, tight bowling from Holmes and some very good ring fielding. Overton away next week, looking to build on the tie we had 2 years previous.
